What is Kintsugi?

Kintsugi (Japanese: 金継ぎ, meaning 'golden joinery'), also known as kintsukuroi (金繕い, meaning 'golden repair'), is a traditional Japanese art form where broken pottery is repaired using urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold. This practice not only restores the pottery but also highlights its fractures, embracing the beauty in imperfections. As a philosophy, kintsugi aligns with wabi-sabi, which appreciates the flawed or imperfect. Additionally, kintsugi reflects the Japanese philosophy of mushin (無心, meaning 'no mind'), which involves concepts of non-attachment and acceptance of change as fundamental aspects of human life. 

At Nirvana Healing Arts, we teach modern Kintsugi techniques that allow participants to complete a finished piece during class. Unlike the traditional Japanese method, which takes weeks and uses natural lacquer, our approach uses contemporary materials that are beginner-friendly and safe.

Throughout the workshop, you'll learn the repair process, explore different design ideas and techniques, and enjoy a relaxing, creative atmosphere. No artistic experience is necessary, and all materials are provided.

This is not an advanced ceramics restoration class. Rather, it is a mindful creative experience inspired by the philosophy of Kintsugi, inviting you to slow down, create something meaningful, and leave with both a completed piece and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of imperfection.
